Earlier this year, winter storms caused power outages across several neighborhoods in Roanoke, Va. In response, Appalachian Power launched a targeted infrastructure improvement project to enhance service reliability for over 250 customers in the area.
Our crews recently completed upgrades along a key circuit, including the installation of a new switch cabinet, nine taller and stronger poles and over 2,600 feet of new electrical wire—both above and underground. This reconfiguration helps distribute electricity more efficiently and will minimize the number of customers affected by future outages.
“We know how disruptive outages can be, especially in colder months,” said the Roanoke Engineering Team. “This project is part of our broader commitment to delivering safe, consistent service to every customer every day.”
Additionally, tree trimming and brush clearing were completed to further reduce the risk of storm-related disruptions.
These upgrades will significantly benefit customers along Carefree Lane, Dent Road and Pendleton Drive NW, as shown in the shaded area of our project map. While occasional outages may still occur, this work will result in quicker restoration times and more reliable service overall.
