We're using advanced technology to make energy management easier for customers. With 99% of customers’ homes being equipped with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters, nearly all customers can use tools to manage their energy use.

Appalachian Power (APCo) employees joined forces with CSX, the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, Food City and others to distribute more than 15 tons of toys to rural Appalachian communities during the 83rd Santa Train on Nov. 22.

Appalachian Power gathered key personnel from its service areas on November 12 at its Roanoke office for a mock storm exercise, a proactive measure ahead of the impending winter storm season.

“Appalachian Power is such a great community partner,” said Kristin Margolin Anderson, vice president of marketing and philanthropy at WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals. “They recognize the benefit of this program and what we're able to do to change lives in West Virginia. We’re just so grateful for their donation because we want to break down any barrier we can for patients so they can get this routine screening. We don't want geography to be a challenge. We don't want money to be a challenge.”

Appalachian Power employees recently assisted the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) with a habitat project designed to increase fish populations in Smith Mountain Lake. 

A changing economic landscape is bringing families back home. “I’ve been waiting for 29 years for something like this to happen.”

For Justin Kirk, a distribution system analysis engineer, improving reliability is the top priority. At the start of this year, Kirk – and the entire APCo team – began proactively monitoring “blinks,” brief interruptions in power flow that last only a few seconds and often go unnoticed by customers. 

In September 2025, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announced that Nathan Trotter would invest approximately $65 million to construct Tin Ridge, a first-of-its-kind metal production and processing facility in Henry County.

We're advancing early site work for a potential Small Modular Reactor at Joshua Falls in Campbell County through environmental and technical studies. These activities are part of the detailed site characterization process required for an Early Site Permit application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
